The tools, one by one
Google Try-On in Search and Shopping
Per Google's Try-On help page, you search for a top, bottom, or dress, click "Try it on," and upload a photo. It works in 18 countries. You need to be 18 or older, signed in, and have Search history and personalized recommendations turned on.
Those are the examples the shopper-facing page walks you through, not the full list of what's covered. Google's Merchant Center documentation states the supported categories as shoes, tops, bottoms, and dresses, and excludes lingerie, bathing suits, and accessories. So if you're shopping for footwear, it's worth looking for the Try-On option even though the shopper walkthrough doesn't use it as an example.
For better results, Google recommends a head-to-toe photo or a selfie, with good lighting, a clean background, hands visible, and fitted clothing. In the US you can also create a digital version of yourself from a selfie, using Google's Nano Banana image model, and reuse it.
For brands, Google's Merchant Center help says any merchant with a shopping feed that's eligible for free listings is automatically opted into Try-On, across all four supported categories — shoes, tops, bottoms, and dresses. The feature isn't available for Shopping ads, and merchants can opt out.

Amazon Virtual Try-On
Amazon runs both kinds of try-on. Its Virtual Try-On page says apparel try-on, on clothing product pages in the US, uses AI to render clothing onto an image of you, while eyewear try-on uses AR in the US and Canada. Earlier, Amazon launched Virtual Try-On for Shoes lets you point your phone at your feet and see sneakers from every angle, in the Amazon Shopping app on iOS, for customers in the US and Canada. Amazon also describes AR try-on for sunglasses, lip colors, and eyeshadow in its app.
On fit, Amazon leans on the third category: AI size recommendations and fit insights pulled from customer reviews.
Perfect Corp, for beauty and eyewear brands
Perfect Corp sells try-on to businesses. Its eyewear solution tracks your face in real time, measures pupillary distance automatically, and installs as a plugin on Shopify, Wix, and Squarespace. In January 2026 the company announced generative fashion APIs for watches, bracelets, rings, earrings, necklaces, scarves, hats, shoes, and bags, alongside its existing clothes and fabric APIs.
Snap Lens Studio and Camera Kit

IDM-VTON and open research
If you're technical and want to see how generative try-on works under the hood, IDM-VTON is a well-known diffusion model for virtual try-on, published at ECCV 2024, trained on the VITON-HD dataset and evaluated on VITON-HD and DressCode. What virtual try-on gets wrong
Look is not fit. A generative model produces a believable image. It doesn't know your measurements or the garment's real ones. Google's help page states plainly that the visualizations don't determine or guarantee actual fit.
Body diversity is uneven. Google's own guidance asks for fitted clothing and a clear full-body pose, and warns that generated images can contain errors in body shape. A full-length photo of you is sensitive. Before uploading, check three things: whether it's used to train models, whether you can delete it, and who else sees it.
Google's help page says it doesn't collect biometric data from try-on photos, doesn't use them for training, doesn't share them with other Google services or third parties, and lets you delete them anytime.
