Best AI Interior Design App: 9 Room Redesign Tools Compared

October 27, 2026

AI Agents & Tools

The best AI interior design app depends on what you want at the end. For a fast restyle of a room photo, use Interior AI or REimagineHome. For a floor plan you can walk through in 3D, use Planner 5D or Homestyler. To see real IKEA furniture in your own room, use IKEA Kreativ. And if you only want to try one idea for free, Gemini or ChatGPT can restyle a room photo from a plain-English prompt.

Most "best of" lists treat these as the same product. They aren't. They fall into three groups:

  • Photo redesign apps: you upload a picture of your room and get restyled versions back.
  • Room planners with AI added: you build the room as a 2D/3D model, then furnish and render it.
  • General image models: you get no interior presets, just a chat box that edits your photo.

After the comparison: how to shoot the photo and write a prompt that gets you something usable.

How to pick the best AI interior design app

  1. Do you need the room to stay the same shape? Dedicated redesign apps try to keep walls, windows and the camera angle fixed. General image models sometimes move a window or widen the room.
  2. Do you want to buy what you see? Only REimagineHome and IKEA Kreativ connect the picture to products you can actually order.
  3. Do you need measurements? A restyled photo is a picture, not a plan. If you're deciding whether a sofa fits, you want a planner with a real floor plan.
  4. Is this for a listing or for your own home? Collov and REimagineHome sell heavily to real estate agents, with plans sized for monthly photo volumes.

Photo redesign apps

Upload one photo, get restyled versions back. The fastest way to answer "what would this room look like in Japandi?"

Interior AI

Interior AI is the most complete pure redesign tool here. You upload a room photo, pick a room type and one of 50+ styles, or upload a reference photo of a look you like. Modes cover redesign, virtual staging for empty rooms, sketch-to-render and outdoor spaces, and higher tiers add video flythroughs and 3D walkthroughs.

Two details from its FAQ matter. Its 3D Vision mode "tries to maintain" your room while changing the style, which is honest: it's not guaranteed. And it's subscription-only with no refunds, so there's no cheap way to test it on one room.

Best for: people who want many style variations of the same room, quickly.

RoomGPT

RoomGPT does one thing: upload a photo, choose a theme, get a redesign. It's simple and quick, and it's sold through paid plans.

Its first version is open source on GitHub under an MIT licence. The README describes it as the predecessor of the paid product, without accounts, payments or later features. If you're technical, you can run that version yourself and pay only the model hosting.

Best for: a fast, no-frills restyle, or developers who want to see how a redesign app is built.

REimagineHome

REimagineHome covers the widest range: redesign, virtual staging, decluttering, paint and surface changes, kitchens and bathrooms, plus exteriors and landscaping. A structure-lock setting keeps walls, windows and ceiling lines fixed.

It's also the one photo app that ties the image to real furniture. Designs can use shoppable products within a budget, and you check out on the retailer's site. REimagineHome says it earns a commission on qualifying purchases. Its pricing page gives new users a few free designs with no card, then monthly plans paid in credits; real product discovery and reference photos sit on the Pro plan and above.

Best for: homeowners who want a redesign they can actually buy.

Collov AI

Collov AI is built mainly for real estate: virtual staging of empty rooms, multi-angle staging that keeps the same furniture across several shots, style swaps, wall and floor changes, and twilight or seasonal edits. Plans are monthly or yearly subscriptions with a set number of photo credits, a watermarked free trial to start, and 360° panoramas and 3D tours on the top plans.

Best for: agents and sellers staging listing photos.

Room planners with AI added

These start from the room's geometry: slower to set up, but with real dimensions.

Planner 5D

Planner 5D is a 2D/3D home planner first. You draw or upload a floor plan, furnish it from a large catalog, and render it. Its AI Room Decorator adds the photo route: upload a furnished or empty room, describe the look ("a cozy bedroom with natural materials and softer lighting"), and compare versions. You can also ask it to keep a piece you own, such as your current sofa.

According to Planner 5D's pricing page, the free plan includes unlimited projects and half the furniture catalog. Premium and Professional subscriptions unlock the full catalog, floor-plan-to-3D upload and a monthly allowance for AI Studio. It runs on web, iOS, Android, Windows and macOS.

Best for: people planning a real layout who also want AI restyles.

Homestyler

Homestyler is another full 3D planner. Upload a floor plan or sketch and it converts it into an editable 3D model. Its AI Studio adds image-to-image restyling ("design any space in any style"), moodboards from any image, and AI floor plans. Homestyler says its library holds over 10 million branded 3D furniture models.

The Homestyler pricing page lists a free Basic plan for the 3D planner, with only a small starting allowance for AI tools. Paid plans add monthly AI credits and higher-resolution renders, and some renders cost coins on a pay-per-use basis.

Best for: detailed 3D renders, if you don't mind learning a planner.

IKEA Kreativ

IKEA Kreativ answers one question: what would IKEA furniture look like in my room? In the IKEA app you scan the room. A full 3D scan needs a LiDAR device such as an iPhone Pro or iPad Pro, and a photographic wide-angle scan covers other cases. Kreativ can digitally remove your existing furniture, so you don't have to empty the room first. You then place, swap and arrange IKEA products and keep designing on the IKEA website with the same account.

IKEA's support article calls it a "free virtual room designer." The catch is obvious: it's IKEA only. That article is from IKEA's UK site, so check your local IKEA site for what's offered where you live.

Best for: anyone who already plans to buy from IKEA.

General image models

No presets, no catalog: upload a photo and describe the change. More flexible than the dedicated apps, and less predictable.

Gemini (Nano Banana)

Google's Nano Banana image models in the Gemini app can edit an uploaded photo: replace objects, add elements, change lighting and adjust details. Google's image generation page lists a no-cost Nano Banana model, with newer models and higher limits on paid Google AI plans. Images carry an invisible SynthID watermark.

It's strongest at targeted edits ("swap the rug for a jute one, keep everything else") rather than full restyles in one shot. If you want prompt patterns, our Nano Banana prompts guide covers the structure.

ChatGPT image editing

ChatGPT works the same way: attach a room photo and ask for changes. OpenAI's image generation docs note that you can select a specific area of the image and describe the change only there. Availability and limits depend on your plan.

Best for both: one-off ideas, odd styles no preset covers, and small edits. If you're comparing image tools more broadly, see our free AI image generators roundup.

Is there a free AI interior design app?

Yes, with limits. Here's what's genuinely free, based on each vendor's own page:

AppWhat's free
IKEA KreativThe room designer itself, with IKEA products
Planner 5DUnlimited projects and half the furniture catalog
HomestylerBasic 3D planner; AI tools mostly need a paid plan
REimagineHomeA handful of starter designs, no card
Collov AIA watermarked trial
GeminiA no-cost Nano Banana model with usage limits
RoomGPT (original)The open-source version, if you host it yourself

Interior AI is the exception. Its FAQ doesn't mention a trial and offers no refunds.

How to get a good result: the photo and the prompt

Most bad redesigns come from a bad photo, not a bad app.

Taking the photo

  • Shoot from a corner, at chest height. Two walls and the floor give the model the room's geometry.
  • Use daylight and turn the lights on. Dark, grainy photos make the model invent shadows and surfaces.
  • Hold the phone level. Tilted verticals come back as warped walls.
  • Clear the clutter, keep the furniture. Loose items confuse the model; big furniture tells it the scale.
  • Use the main camera, not ultra-wide. Ultra-wide distortion gets "fixed" in strange ways.

Writing the prompt

Preset apps only need a style and room type. General models need a real prompt: what to keep, what to change, the style, the mood.

Keep the walls, windows, floor and camera angle exactly as they are.
Restyle this living room in a warm Japandi style: low oak furniture,
linen sofa in oatmeal, paper lantern pendant, one large plant.
Soft late-afternoon light. Photorealistic.

For small changes, name the single thing:

Replace only the rug with a large flat-weave jute rug. Change nothing else.

Change one thing per round. If the room shape drifts, repeat the "keep" sentence. For a deeper look at prompt structure, our guide on how to write a prompt for an AI image covers subject, style, lighting and framing.

What happens to your home photos

A room photo can reveal your layout, valuables, family photos, documents and a view that hints at where you live.

Policies differ a lot:

  • Interior AI says it does not train on uploaded photos and that your photos and renders are only accessible by you.
  • Gemini, by default, may use your chats and uploads to improve Google's models, and a subset is reviewed by humans, per Google's Gemini privacy help page. Turning off Keep Activity stops future chats being used for training, though they're still kept for 72 hours.
  • The rest handle this in their own privacy policies. Read the section on uploaded content before you upload.

Practical habits: crop out windows with a recognisable view, remove documents and family photos from the frame, and strip location data from the image before uploading. On iPhone, the share sheet's Options menu lets you turn location off for that photo.

FAQ

What is the best AI interior design app for beginners?

IKEA Kreativ or REimagineHome. Kreativ walks you through a scan and uses products you can buy. REimagineHome needs only one photo and a few clicks, and lets you start without a card.

Can AI interior design apps give me furniture I can buy?

Only some. REimagineHome links designs to real products and checks out on the retailer's site, and IKEA Kreativ uses IKEA's catalog. Most other apps generate furniture that looks real but isn't for sale.

Are AI room designs accurate enough to plan a renovation?

Not on their own. A restyled photo shows a mood, not measurements. Use a planner with a real floor plan, such as Planner 5D or Homestyler, before buying anything that has to fit.

Which AI decorating app works best on iPhone?

Planner 5D, Homestyler and IKEA all have iOS apps, and IKEA Kreativ's full room scan needs a LiDAR iPhone or iPad. The photo-redesign apps run in the mobile browser, and our best AI apps for iPhone list covers the assistants that handle the prompt route.

The short version

  • Restyle a photo fast: Interior AI or RoomGPT.
  • Restyle and buy the result: REimagineHome, or IKEA Kreativ for IKEA furniture.
  • Stage listing photos: Collov AI.
  • Plan a real layout in 3D: Planner 5D or Homestyler.
  • Try one idea for free: Gemini or ChatGPT with a "keep / change / style / mood" prompt.
  • Before uploading: crop out anything personal and check whether the app trains on your photos.

Do this a few times and you end up with a prompt sequence that works, one you want to rerun on every room without rebuilding it. Taku mirrors an AI app or workflow someone already got working into a desktop workspace, where you can run it, edit it and save it as your own. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.
