Can Claude Generate Images? What It Makes, and 5 Workarounds
October 29, 2026

No, Claude can't generate images the way Midjourney, ChatGPT or Gemini can. Anthropic's own help article, Can Claude produce images?, says Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do. That's still the official answer as of October 2026.
But "no photos" isn't the same as "no visuals." Here's what Claude can actually produce, and how people get real images out of a Claude workflow anyway:
- Built in: diagrams, charts and interactive visuals, drawn with HTML and SVG
- With code execution: charts and graphics rendered by code, downloadable as files
- Through a connector: design tools like Canva, working inside the chat
- In Claude Code: a real image model wired in through MCP or a skill
- As a prompt writer: Claude drafts the prompt, a dedicated image tool renders it
Below is what each one is good for, where it falls short, and how to set up the ones that take setup.
Does Claude generate images? The official answer
Claude is a text-and-code model with vision. It can read images: upload a screenshot, a chart or a photo and it will describe, analyze or extract from it. It can't paint one. There's no built-in model in Claude that turns a prompt into pixels.
What Anthropic does offer is a visual layer built from code. Its help article on custom visuals in chat describes diagrams, charts and interactive elements that Claude builds from scratch for your question. They're HTML, the same building blocks as a web page, which is why you can click buttons and drag sliders inside them.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can Claude AI generate images like photos or illustrations? | No |
| Can Claude make diagrams, charts and interactive visuals? | Yes, built with HTML and SVG |
| Can Claude look at and analyze images you upload? | Yes |
| Can Claude call a real image model? | Yes, if you connect one through a connector, MCP server or skill |
So when someone asks "does Claude generate images," the honest answer depends on what kind of image they mean. A product photo for an ad? Not natively. A flowchart of your onboarding funnel? Easily.
If you're choosing between assistants partly on this point, our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison covers where each one is the stronger pick. ChatGPT ships native image generation; Claude doesn't.
What Claude can make without any setup
Diagrams, charts and interactive visuals
You don't turn anything on. Anthropic says Claude decides when a visual would help, and you can also ask outright with phrases like "draw this as a diagram" or "chart this data." Some examples from the help center:
- "Show me how this process works" gets you a flowchart
- Upload a CSV and ask what the data shows, and you get an interactive chart
- "Help me decide between two options" gets a side-by-side comparison
Custom visuals are in beta on Claude web and desktop, in both chat and Cowork. They don't render on the iOS or Android apps.
They're also temporary by default. A visual lives inside the response and isn't saved when the conversation moves on. To keep one, Anthropic lists three options: copy it as an image, download it as an .svg or .html file, or save it as an artifact you can keep editing.
SVG graphics: icons, logos and simple illustrations
SVG is a text format for vector graphics. Shapes, paths and colors are written as code, which means Claude can write it. Ask for "an SVG icon of a paper plane in two colors" or "a simple flat logo mark for a coffee brand, as SVG" and you get a file that scales to any size without blurring.
This works well for:
- Icons and simple logo concepts
- Badges, stickers and banners with text
- Flat, geometric illustrations
- Infographic layouts
It works badly for anything photographic. SVG can't produce a convincing face, a landscape or a product shot, because those need millions of pixels of shading, not a few hundred shapes. Expect clean geometry, not realism.
Claude Design for visual layouts
For slides, one-pagers, landing pages and app screens, Anthropic's Claude Design builds a first version on a canvas you refine by chatting. It's still HTML under the hood. Treat it as a layout and prototyping tool, not an image generator.
Charts and graphics with code execution
When code execution and file creation is on, Claude can run code in a sandbox and hand you real files. Anthropic's file creation article lists reports with charts and visualizations among the things it can produce, and says the feature is available on every plan across web, desktop and mobile.
In practice, that means Claude writes a short Python script, runs it, and returns a PNG or a document with the chart already embedded. This is the right path when:
- You need a static image file, not an interactive widget
- The chart comes from your data, like an uploaded spreadsheet
- You want it inside a deliverable, like a PowerPoint deck or a PDF report
On Free, Pro and Max plans you enable it under Settings → Capabilities. On Team and Enterprise plans, an organization owner controls it.
The same sandbox can do basic deterministic work on an image you upload, like resizing, cropping or converting formats, because that's just code operating on pixels you supplied. It still isn't generating anything new.
Connect a real image model to Claude
This is the workaround most people searching "can Claude AI generate images" actually want: keep Claude as the brain, and let a dedicated image model do the drawing.
Option 1: a design connector in the Claude app
Some connectors render live interfaces inside the conversation. Anthropic's interactive connectors article lists Canva, for creating and editing designs, and Figma, for reviewing and annotating them. You connect the service once, then ask Claude for something the connector handles. The design tool does the visual work; Claude handles the conversation around it.
Option 2: an image model through MCP in Claude Code
The Model Context Protocol lets Claude call outside tools. In Claude Code, you add a remote MCP server with one command:
claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>
Point that at an MCP server that wraps an image API and Claude can call it like any other tool: write the prompt, request the image, save the file into your project. Check the server's own docs for what it supports, and remember that a third-party MCP server runs with whatever access you give it.
Option 3: a skill that calls an image API
If you'd rather not depend on someone else's server, a Claude Code skill can do the same job with a short script. Anthropic's skills docs describe a SKILL.md file plus a folder of supporting files, including scripts Claude runs when the skill applies. A typical image skill looks like this:
.claude/skills/hero-image/
├── SKILL.md # when to use it, what sizes and style to default to
└── scripts/
└── generate.py # calls the image API, saves the file
The script calls an official image API with a key you keep in an environment variable. Two well-documented options:
| API | Where the docs live | Notes from the docs |
|---|---|---|
| Google's Nano Banana models | Gemini API image generation | Text-to-image and image editing; every generated image carries a SynthID watermark |
| OpenAI's GPT Image models | OpenAI image generation guide | An Image API for one-shot generation and edits, plus a Responses API for multi-turn editing |
Both are paid APIs billed by the provider, separately from your Claude plan. Model names in both families change often, so read the current model list in each doc before you hard-code one. If you're picking between them, our GPT Image 2 vs Nano Banana breakdown compares how they handle text, edits and style.
The payoff of the skill route is repeatability. Once the skill knows your sizes, style and output folder, "make a hero image for this post" works the same way every time.
Use Claude to write prompts for image tools
The lowest-effort workaround needs no setup at all. Claude is good at turning a vague idea into a specific, well-structured image prompt, and that's the part most people struggle with.
A useful pattern:
- Describe what the image is for: the platform, the audience, the message
- Ask Claude for three prompt variations in different styles
- Name the target tool, since Midjourney, GPT Image and Nano Banana respond to phrasing differently
- Paste the best one into the image tool and bring the result back to Claude for critique
Claude can see the image you bring back, so it can tell you what drifted from the brief and rewrite the prompt for the next round. For the prompt structure itself, see our guide on how to write a prompt for an AI image. If you still need a tool to render the result, our list of the best free AI image generators covers the options with real free usage.
Which workaround to use
| You need | Use | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| A diagram or chart while you think | Custom visuals in chat | None |
| An icon, badge or simple logo concept | SVG from Claude | None |
| A chart file from your spreadsheet | Code execution and file creation | One toggle |
| A social graphic or presentation design | A design connector like Canva | Connect once |
| Photos or illustrations inside a coding workflow | MCP server or skill calling an image API | API key plus config |
| A better prompt for the image tool you already use | Claude as prompt writer | None |
The pattern across all of these: Claude plans, writes and reviews, and something else renders pixels. If Anthropic ever ships native image generation, its help center is where the answer will change first.
When the setup is the hard part
Wiring an image API into a skill is a ten-minute job for someone who lives in a terminal and an afternoon of frustration for everyone else. If you've seen an AI image workflow you want to use but stalled at the API keys and config, Taku is an AI-native desktop workspace where you mirror an AI setup someone already got working and run it, without rebuilding their environment first. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.
FAQ
Can Claude generate images?
No. Claude doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image-generation tools do. It can build diagrams, charts and interactive visuals with HTML and SVG, and it can analyze images you upload.
Does Claude generate images in the paid plans?
No plan adds native image generation. Paid plans change usage limits and features, not this. Code execution, which turns data into chart files, is available on every plan according to Anthropic.
Can Claude AI generate images through Claude Code?
Not by itself. Claude Code can call an image model if you connect one, either through an MCP server or a skill with a script that calls an image API such as Google's Gemini API or OpenAI's image API.
Can Claude edit an image I upload?
It can analyze the image, and with code execution on it can make deterministic edits like resizing, cropping or converting the file. It can't repaint the content, swap a background or generate new elements the way an image-editing model does.
Can Claude make a logo?
It can make simple logo concepts as SVG: geometric marks, wordmarks and icon-style designs that scale cleanly. For detailed or photographic logos, use Claude to write the brief and prompt, then render it in a dedicated image tool.
Why doesn't Claude generate images?
Anthropic's help article doesn't give a reason. It simply states what Claude does instead: visuals built from HTML and SVG, and analysis of images you upload. Connectors and MCP cover the rest.
