What Is Claude Cowork? The Merge Into One Claude, Explained

October 26, 2026

AI Agents & Tools

What is Claude Cowork? It's the part of Claude that takes a whole task off your hands. You describe an outcome, like a report, a cleaned-up folder, or a deck, and Claude plans the steps, works through your files and tools, and hands back finished work for your review.

That definition just got a twist. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. In the new experience there's no "Cowork" option to pick. Every conversation can take on a Cowork-sized task.

Here's the short version:

  • Cowork uses the same agentic setup that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required.
  • It runs in the cloud, so a task keeps going after you close your laptop.
  • The merge is rolling out by plan: Pro and Max first, with Team and Free to follow, and Enterprise on its own track.
  • Your Cowork skills are tied to your Claude account, managed in Customize > Skills, not in a folder you have to find.

The rest of this guide covers what Cowork does, what the merge changed, the exact rollout order, and how skills work now.

What Claude Cowork does

Anthropic's Cowork help article describes it as bringing Claude Code's agentic capabilities to knowledge work beyond coding. Instead of answering one prompt at a time, Claude takes on a multi-step task and carries it out.

When you hand Cowork a task, Claude:

  1. Analyzes your request and makes a plan
  2. Breaks complex work into subtasks
  3. Runs code and shell commands in an isolated environment on Anthropic's servers
  4. Coordinates several workstreams in parallel when that helps
  5. Delivers finished files to your session to preview and download

The capabilities that make it different from a regular chat:

CapabilityWhat it means for you
Cloud sessionsWork continues if you close your laptop, and you can open the same session on desktop, web, or mobile
Local file accessOn desktop, Claude reads and writes files in folders you've connected, without manual uploads
Real deliverablesExcel files with working formulas, PowerPoint decks, and formatted documents
Scheduled tasksType /schedule and a task runs on a cadence, in the cloud, with no device online
Browser actionsClaude can open sites, read pages, click, and fill forms in a browser built into Claude Desktop, or in your own Chrome through Claude in Chrome
ProjectsGroup related tasks with their own files, instructions, and memory

Anthropic's own examples are refreshingly dull, which is the point. Organize a Downloads folder by type and date. Turn a folder of receipts into an expense report. Pull themes and quotes out of five interview transcripts. The Cowork product page adds scheduled weekly readouts and a first-pass review of a folder of contracts.

Who can use it? The help center says Cowork is available on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Things that touch your own computer, like local files, browser use, and computer use, need the Claude Desktop app for macOS or Windows open and connected, even though the session itself runs in the cloud. If you're new to the desktop app, our Claude Desktop guide walks through what it includes.

How much Claude checks in with you

Cowork lets you choose how independently Claude acts. In the new merged experience, the permission setting in the message box has two options:

  • Auto, the default on Pro, Max, and Team: Claude keeps working and automated safety checks run before each action.
  • Manual, the default on Enterprise: Claude asks before acting, and you allow or deny each step.

The older Cowork mode selector also had a "Skip all approvals" mode, where nothing checks Claude's actions. Anthropic's advice is to use that only when you fully trust every connector, file, and app involved. Either way, Cowork asks for explicit permission before permanently deleting files.

Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude

Anthropic's announcement explains the reason plainly. Cowork was built as a separate place for bigger work, and people told Anthropic the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged. Work started in one place also didn't carry into the other.

So the split is going away. In the new experience, a quick question still gets a quick answer, and a bigger request turns into a Cowork-style task in the same conversation. Anthropic's help article on Cowork and chat becoming one Claude puts it this way: what you could previously only do in Cowork is available from any conversation.

The same announcement launched Claude Docs and Claude Slides, and brought Claude Design inside conversations. The blog post described all three as in beta on paid plans at the time. We cover Design separately in our guide to Claude Design.

The rollout order, as Anthropic stated it

This is the part most people get wrong, so here it is in Anthropic's order:

PlanWhat Anthropic said
Pro and MaxFirst. Rolling out over the coming weeks on web, desktop, and mobile, to existing and new users. Nothing to turn on
Team and Free"Will follow soon," per the September 16 post
EnterpriseAdmins would hear from Anthropic at least 30 days before anything changed for their organization

Two updates since then:

  • Enterprise is now generally available. On October 23, 2026, Anthropic announced the unified experience is generally available for Claude Enterprise. Admins manage the rollout in Organization settings.
  • Team is in beta. The help center now says that on Team plans (in beta) and Enterprise plans, it's available where "Chat and Cowork unified" is turned on.

Even on the same plan, accounts move over at different times. Anthropic's test is simple: if your message box still shows separate "Chat" and "Cowork" options, you don't have the new experience yet. Once you do, you can't switch back.

What moved where

Nothing is lost in the move. Your chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills carry over, and old Cowork tasks open as they did before. A few things live in new places:

Old Cowork locationWhere it is now
Cowork tasks listIn Recents, alongside your chats
Cowork Global instructionsInstructions for Claude, in Settings > Your Claude
Web search toggleGone. Claude searches the web when it helps
Research modeType /deep-research, or pick Research from the "+" button
Files Cowork saved on your computerStill there. Look for Storage folder in Settings; connected folders are under Trusted folders

The help center also lists current limitations. Adding from GitHub isn't supported, you can't branch a conversation from an earlier point, and search doesn't cover older Cowork tasks, though you can still find them by name in Recents. Dispatch isn't available to new users.

Where Claude Cowork skills are stored

Searchers ask this a lot, usually because they expect a hidden folder like Claude Code's .claude/skills/. Anthropic doesn't document a local folder for Cowork skills. What it documents is account-level management: skills live with your Claude account, and you manage them in Customize > Skills.

According to Anthropic's skills help article:

  • Turn skills on. Skills need code execution. On Free, Pro, and Max, check Settings > Capabilities and make sure "Code execution and file creation" (called "Create and edit files" in the updated layout) is on. Then toggle individual skills in Customize > Skills.
  • Upload your own. Package your skill folder as a ZIP, then in Customize > Skills click "+", then "+ Create skill", then "Upload a skill."
  • Built-in skills. Anthropic's own skills for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and PDF work automatically when they're relevant.
  • Team and Enterprise. Your skills list splits into Personal skills, Shared with you, and Organization skills. You can share a skill with colleagues or publish it to your organization's library, depending on what your owner allows.

Because skills belong to your account, they follow you. The help center says skill sharing works in both chat and Cowork, and skills you've enabled also load in the Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook add-ins. A plugin you add is saved to your account too, so it works in chat, Claude Code, and Cowork.

Claude Code picks them up as well. Skills you've enabled in your Claude settings load in Claude Code when you sign in with the same account (v2.1.273 or later). Run /skills and they're listed under "claude.ai sync." The sync is one-way and reads from your account. It doesn't apply when Claude Code uses an API key or runs on a cloud provider like Amazon Bedrock.

If you want the format itself, meaning the SKILL.md file and how a description tells Claude when to use a skill, our Claude Skills guide covers it.

One safety note from Anthropic: only install skills from sources you trust. Skills can include code or tell Claude to install packages, so read a skill's files before you turn it on, including one a colleague shared.

When Cowork is the right tool

The merge means you no longer pick a mode, but you still decide how big a job to hand over. A rough split:

Hand Claude a full task whenKeep it a quick exchange when
The output is a file: a deck, a spreadsheet, a reportYou need an answer, not a deliverable
The work spans several sources or appsEverything Claude needs is already in the chat
It should run on a scheduleIt's a one-time question
You'd rather check back later than watchYou want to steer every line

Mind your usage. Longer agentic tasks that search the web, run code, or create files use more of your plan's limits than a quick question. Anthropic's tips: group related work into one task, start a new conversation for unrelated work, and say when you only need a quick answer. You can check usage in Settings > Usage.

Write the brief like you'd brief a colleague. Anthropic recommends three things in every task: the outcome you want ("a one-page summary"), the format ("a slide deck"), and the inputs Claude should work from (files, links, or connected apps).

Where Taku fits

Cowork is a strong answer when your work already lives in your files and connected apps, and you want Claude to carry a task end to end. The harder part for many people is the setup that power users share online: a specific skill, a workflow, a configured agent that someone else got working.

Taku is built for that gap. It's an AI-native desktop workspace where you mirror an AI setup someone already got working, run it, remix it for your own work, and keep it. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.

FAQ

What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic mode for knowledge work. You describe an outcome, and Claude plans the steps, works across your files, browser, and connected apps, and returns finished documents, spreadsheets, or decks. It uses the same agentic architecture as Claude Code, without a terminal.

Is Claude Cowork going away?

Not its capabilities. Anthropic announced on September 16, 2026 that Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, so everything Cowork does becomes available from any conversation. The separate "Cowork" option in the message box disappears once your account moves to the new experience.

When will I get the merged Claude experience?

Anthropic is rolling it out to Pro and Max plans first, with Team and Free plans to follow. Enterprise became generally available on October 23, 2026, and Team is in beta where an admin turns it on. If your message box still shows "Chat" and "Cowork," you don't have it yet.

Where are Claude Cowork skills stored?

Anthropic doesn't document a local folder for them. Skills are tied to your Claude account and managed in Customize > Skills, where you can toggle, upload, share, or delete them. Skills you enable there also sync into Claude Code when you sign in with the same account.

Does Claude Cowork need the desktop app?

Not for every task. Cowork sessions run in the cloud and work on web and mobile. Tasks that use local files, your browser, or computer use need Claude Desktop for macOS or Windows open and connected.

Which plans include Claude Cowork?

Anthropic's help center lists Cowork on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Plan contents change, so check Anthropic's pricing page for current details.
