Claude Voice Mode: Where It Works and How to Start

September 7, 2026

AI Agents & Tools

Yes, Claude has voice chat. You speak, Claude speaks back, and you can switch between voice and text inside the same conversation without losing your place.

The three things worth knowing before you go looking for the button:

  • It's on every plan — Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise — and it's still labelled beta.
  • It works on mobile, desktop, and web, but it's built to work best from a phone.
  • It does not work with Claude Code or Cowork. If that's what you came for, skip to the last section.

Turning it on

The control is a sound wave icon, and its location depends on where you are:

WhereHow to start
Mobile (iOS, Android)Tap the sound wave icon next to the microphone in the text input field
Web and desktopClick the sound wave symbol in the lower right of the chat window

You get a choice of preset voices. Change them in Settings → General → Voice on web and desktop, or during a chat session on mobile.

Non-English languages are supported on all plans and all three surfaces, though language support beyond English is itself still in beta.

What it's actually good for

Voice mode earns its place when your hands are busy and your head isn't — walking, driving, cooking, or thinking out loud before you know what you're actually asking. The mode is genuinely conversational rather than a dictation box with text-to-speech bolted on: you interrupt, it adjusts, and you can drop back to typing mid-conversation when you need to paste something.

It also reaches your connected apps. With Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, or Slack connected, you can ask Claude to check your inbox, look at tomorrow's calendar, or summarise a thread — spoken, hands-free. Expect a short pause when several tools are involved.

The limits, plainly

Four constraints, and the first is the one that sends people here in the first place:

  • Not available with Claude Code. Voice mode is a Chat feature. The Code tab and the CLI don't have it.
  • Not available with Cowork.
  • Claude Fable models aren't supported.
  • Voice conversations count toward your normal usage limits. Speaking isn't cheaper than typing.

A stable connection matters more than for text, since audio streams in both directions.

Voice mode is not voice dictation

This distinction resolves most of the confusion around "Claude Code voice":

  • Voice mode is a spoken conversation — Claude talks back. Chat only.
  • Voice dictation is speech-to-text input — your words become a prompt, and the reply is written.

Claude Code has no voice mode, but the CLI does support voice dictation, which is what you actually want when the goal is "describe the change without typing it." On the Linux desktop app, dictation isn't available at all yet and Anthropic points Linux users to the CLI for it — one of a handful of gaps in that beta, which we covered in Claude on Linux.

So: dictating a prompt to a coding agent, yes. Having a spoken back-and-forth with one, not today.

Does it replace typing?

For a certain kind of work, largely. For anything involving code, file paths, or exact strings, no — and that's not a fixable limitation of the feature so much as a property of speech. Voice is excellent for thinking, triage, and questions with prose answers. It's poor for precision.

The realistic pattern is switching: start a question by voice while walking, finish it by typing when you're back at a keyboard, in the same thread.

FAQ

Does Claude have voice chat?

Yes. Voice mode is a beta feature available on all plans — Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise — on iOS, Android, desktop, and web.

Is Claude voice mode free?

It's included on the free plan. Voice conversations count toward the same usage limits as text, so heavier use runs into the same ceilings. Anthropic's pricing page covers what each plan includes.

How do I turn on voice mode?

Tap or click the sound wave icon — next to the microphone in the input field on mobile, in the lower right of the chat window on web and desktop.

Can I use voice mode with Claude Code?

No. Voice mode doesn't work with Claude Code or Cowork. The CLI supports voice dictation, which turns speech into a written prompt, but there's no spoken conversation with the coding agent.

Can I change Claude's voice?

Yes, there are several preset voices. Change them in Settings → General on web and desktop, or during a session on mobile.

Does voice mode work in other languages?

Yes, on all plans and surfaces, with non-English support itself in beta.

The short version

Voice mode is free, cross-platform, best on a phone, and deliberately scoped to Chat. It's a good way to use Claude while doing something else, and a bad way to specify anything exact. For coding, dictation in the CLI is the nearer tool — see Anthropic's voice mode guide for the current feature list, since beta features move.

Voice makes the input easier without changing what happens to the output: you close the app and the good answer goes with it. Taku is aimed at the second half of that problem — a desktop workspace where a useful result becomes something saved and re-runnable rather than something you'd have to describe again, out loud, next Tuesday. The free app library shows the difference. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.
