Claude vs Gemini: Which AI Assistant Fits Your Work
September 28, 2026

Claude vs Gemini comes down to two questions: what kind of input you work with, and how much of your life already runs through a Google account. If you feed an assistant video, audio, and whatever is in Gmail and Drive, Gemini fits better. If you write, analyze long text, and build with agents and code, Claude fits better.
The short answer, by job:
- Video, audio, and anything already in Google — Gemini
- Agentic coding and long-running tasks in a codebase — Claude
- Generating images or video — Gemini (Claude doesn't do this)
- Long-form writing and careful editing — Claude, for most people
- Everyday questions and summaries — either, honestly
Model versions on both sides change every few weeks, so this comparison skips benchmark scores. It sticks to the parts of each product that have held steady: ecosystem, input types, context, coding tools, and data controls.

Where Gemini is stronger
It sees and hears, not just reads
This is the biggest structural gap. Anthropic's model overview says every current Claude model takes text and image input. No audio. No video.
Gemini takes both. Google's video understanding docs cover video with or without its audio track, and you can pass a YouTube URL straight in. How long a video can be depends on the model, so check the current limits before you plan around a long recording.
So picture a real Tuesday: you have a 50-minute customer call recording and a screen capture of a bug. With Gemini, you hand over both files. With Claude, you transcribe the call first and describe the video in words, or take screenshots.
| Your input | Claude | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| A PDF or long document | Yes | Yes |
| A screenshot or photo | Yes | Yes |
| A meeting recording | Transcribe it first | Upload it directly |
| A YouTube video | Paste a transcript | Paste the URL |
It creates images and video
Claude doesn't generate images. It can build diagrams, charts, and interactive visuals as code, but it doesn't produce photos or illustrations. The Gemini app generates both images and video. If any part of your work ends in a visual, that settles it before anything else.
Google is the default, not an add-on
On Android, Gemini replaces Google Assistant as the phone's main assistant. Long-press, say "Hey Google," and you're in Gemini. Claude on Android is an app you open.
Search works the same way. Grounding with Google Search ties Gemini's answers to live web results with citations. Claude has web search too, but Gemini is plugged into Google's own index.
The old command-line agent is open source
Gemini CLI is Apache 2.0 licensed, supports MCP servers, and has Google Search grounding built in. You can read its code, fork it, and run it inside your own tooling. Claude Code isn't open source. The catch: per Google's developer blog, Gemini CLI stopped serving free users and Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers on June 18, 2026. It now works only with paid API keys and Standard or Enterprise licences, and Google points everyone else to Antigravity CLI.
Where Claude is stronger
Coding agents that run everywhere
Claude Code runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, a desktop app, and the browser. It also runs in the cloud: you can start a long task on the web or from the Claude mobile app and check back later, or set up routines that keep running while your computer is off. It creates commits and pull requests, and it can review PRs in GitHub Actions.
Google's answer now sits in one platform. Antigravity, which Google calls an "agentic development platform," covers the editor-style agent experience, and Antigravity CLI covers the terminal. It replaced Gemini CLI for free, Pro and Ultra users in June 2026. Both work. But if you want one agent that follows you from terminal to IDE to phone to a scheduled cloud job, Claude Code covers more ground today.

Workspaces that build up
Claude has three features that keep work from disappearing into chat history:
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| Projects | A separate workspace with its own chats, uploaded files, and instructions |
| Artifacts | Documents, dashboards, slides, and small interactive tools that open next to the chat and can be shared |
| Skills | Packaged instructions and scripts Claude loads when a task calls for them |
Gemini has Gems (custom assistants with their own instructions and files) and Canvas for editing drafts. They cover similar ground. Claude's version goes further, because Artifacts turn output into something you can publish and other people can use, not just read.
It connects to Google too, without the activity trade-off
This one surprises people. Claude has Google Workspace connectors for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and live editing of Docs, Sheets, and Slides (that last one in beta). They work on every Claude plan.
Gemini reaches Workspace more natively. But Google's help page on connecting Workspace to Gemini says you need Keep Activity turned on to use it. That's the setting that decides whether Google keeps your chats and uses them to improve its products. With Claude, turning on the Gmail connector and turning off model training are two separate switches.
MCP runs through the whole product
MCP started at Anthropic, and Claude uses it across the apps and Claude Code to reach tools like Google Drive, Jira, and Slack. Google's CLI agents support MCP too, so a server you set up isn't locked to one side. The difference is how far it reaches: in Claude, the same connector idea runs from the chat app to the coding agent.
Privacy and data controls
Both companies let you keep conversations out of model training. They do it differently, and the details matter if you paste in client files.
| Claude (Free, Pro, Max) | Gemini app | |
|---|---|---|
| Used for model training | Only if you allow it | Yes, while Keep Activity is on |
| If you opt out | Kept for 30 days | Kept for 72 hours when Keep Activity is off |
| If you opt in / leave it on | Kept for up to five years | Auto-deleted after 18 months by default (3 or 36 months, or never) |
| Required for Google/Workspace connections | No | Yes, Keep Activity has to be on |
Sources: Anthropic's consumer terms update and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, both checked in September 2026.
Two details in the fine print. Anthropic's consumer rules don't apply to its commercial products or the API. And Google's Privacy Hub says a subset of Gemini chats is read by human reviewers, and those reviewed chats are kept for up to three years even if you delete your activity.
Neither setup is careless. Google gives you more ways to adjust retention. Anthropic keeps the training choice separate from the features you use. If you want Gemini reading your Gmail but don't want your chats used for training, those two goals pull against each other.
Claude vs Gemini: how to decide
Start with your inputs, not the model names.
| If your work is mostly… | Pick |
|---|---|
| Meetings, recordings, video, and YouTube research | Gemini |
| Making images or short video clips | Gemini |
| Gmail, Drive, and an Android phone, all day | Gemini |
| Code, repos, and agent tasks that run for hours | Claude |
| Long writing that has to sound like you | Claude |
| Reusable workspaces and shareable tools | Claude |
| Sensitive text you want kept out of training | Claude, or Gemini with Keep Activity off |
Then test. Pick three real tasks from your week and run them through both on the same day. That tells you more than any ranking, this one included. We ran the same exercise against ChatGPT in Claude vs ChatGPT and Gemini vs ChatGPT if the third option is also on your list.
Using both is a normal setup, not indecision. Gemini for recordings and anything in Google, Claude for writing and code.
The part neither one keeps
Whichever you pick, the same thing happens after a good session. The assistant works out a process, you get the result, and next week you explain it all again. Projects and Gems help. Neither gives you the workflow as something you own and can hand to someone else.
Taku is built for that gap. It's an AI-native desktop workspace where you mirror an app, skill, or workflow that someone already got working, run it, remix it for your own files, and keep it. It doesn't replace Claude or Gemini. It keeps what you built with them around. The free app library is a quick way to see what that looks like. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.
FAQ
Is Claude or Gemini better?
Neither wins overall. Gemini is better for video, audio, image generation, and life inside Google's apps. Claude is better for agentic coding, long-form writing, and building reusable workspaces. On everyday questions they're close enough that you should pick on feel.
Claude or Gemini for coding?
Claude, for most people who want an agent. Claude Code runs across the terminal, IDEs, desktop, web, and scheduled cloud jobs. On Google's side, the terminal agent for most people is now Antigravity CLI. Gemini CLI is still open source, but since June 18, 2026 it only serves paid API keys and Standard or Enterprise licences. Pick it if you have that access and need to read or modify the agent itself.
Claude or Gemini for writing?
Claude, for most writers. Its prose usually needs less editing. Pick Gemini if the piece needs images, or if your research lives in Docs and Drive and you want it pulled in automatically.
Which has the bigger context window?
As of September 2026 they're about even: 1M tokens on Gemini's current models and on Claude's top three models, with Claude Haiku at 200K. The bigger difference is what fits in that window. Gemini can take hours of video. Claude takes text and images.
Can Claude read my Gmail and Google Drive?
Yes. Claude has connectors for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, and Docs, Sheets, and Slides on all plans. On Team and Enterprise plans, an admin has to switch them on first.
Does Gemini train on my conversations?
While Keep Activity is on, Google says it uses your activity to improve its services, including training AI models, and a subset of chats gets human review. Turn Keep Activity off and chats are kept for 72 hours. That also turns off connected Workspace apps.
