Best Chatbots for Customer Service, Sorted by Setup

October 24, 2026

AI Agents & ToolsTool Comparisons

The best chatbots for customer service in 2026 are mostly AI agents bolted onto a helpdesk you already pay for. If your team lives in Intercom, Zendesk, Freshdesk, HubSpot or Gorgias, start with that vendor's own AI agent. If you don't have a helpdesk yet, a standalone bot is cheaper to try. And if you run a contact center with voice, you're shopping in a different aisle.

Here's the short version:

  • Already on a helpdesk: Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI agents, Freshdesk's Freddy AI Agent, HubSpot's Customer Agent, or Gorgias AI Agent for ecommerce.
  • Small team, no helpdesk yet: Tidio with Lyro, Chatbase, or Botpress.
  • Enterprise contact center, voice included: Ada or NiCE Cognigy.

The model underneath matters less than three boring things: how the vendor counts a billable conversation, how cleanly the bot hands off to a person, and whether it can take actions like checking an order. This guide compares all three.

Helpdesk Add-On or Standalone Bot?

This is the first decision, and it settles most of the shortlist.

A helpdesk AI agent reads the same tickets, macros and help-center articles your human team uses. When it can't answer, it hands the conversation to an agent inside the same inbox, with the history attached. That's the big advantage: no second system, no copy-pasting context.

A standalone chatbot sits on your website and answers from whatever content you feed it. It's quicker to launch and often cheaper to test. The catch is the handoff. If the bot and your inbox are different products, check exactly what your team sees when a customer asks for a human.

A rough rule:

  • Over a few hundred tickets a month and already on a helpdesk: use the native agent first. Compare outside options only if it can't do what you need.
  • Mostly pre-sales questions on a website, small team: a standalone bot is fine.
  • Phone is a big channel: look at the enterprise platforms, or at agents that list voice as a channel.

If you're still fuzzy on how an AI agent differs from the scripted chatbots of a few years ago, our explainer on the service agent role covers what changed and which parts of the job actually automate.

Helpdesk-Native AI Agents

Intercom Fin

Fin is Intercom's AI agent, and it's no longer tied to Intercom's own inbox. Its pricing page says Fin works with any helpdesk, listing Salesforce, HubSpot, Freshworks, Front, Zoho and Gorgias among the integrations. It covers live chat, email, SMS, WhatsApp and social channels. Voice is offered too, but on a custom pricing plan for select customers working with Intercom's sales team.

Billing is per outcome, charged once per conversation even if Fin takes several actions. On Fin's pricing page at the time of writing, resolutions, Procedure handoffs, disqualifications and self-serve routings are $0.99 each, while a qualification (Fin matching a prospect to your criteria and routing them) is $9.99. A resolution counts when no further help is requested after Fin's last answer. Conversations passed to your team without an outcome aren't charged. The any-helpdesk plan carries a monthly outcome minimum, and there's a 14-day trial with no card required.

Best for: teams that want one AI agent across many channels, whether or not they use Intercom's helpdesk.

Zendesk AI agents

Zendesk meters its AI agents in automated resolutions. Its help-center article on the automated resolutions platform says you're charged only when a customer's issue is resolved without human help, and that each resolution is verified by a language model. Escalated conversations don't use one. Plans include an allowance, and you can buy committed usage, pay overage, or pause the AI agent when you hit the limit.

The model is shifting. That article covers accounts created before May 18, 2026, and says those accounts stay on it until they move to Zendesk's newer resolution tiers. If you're signing up now, ask which model your contract uses.

Best for: support teams already running Zendesk Suite.

Freddy AI Agent (Freshdesk)

Freshworks bills Freddy AI Agent in sessions. Freshdesk's pricing page defines a session as a unique interaction between a customer and the AI agent; for email, every AI reply within a 72-hour window counts as one session. The Growth, Pro and Enterprise plans include a one-time allowance of sessions to try it, and extra sessions come in add-on packs. The page lists a 14-day trial rather than a free plan.

Best for: Freshdesk customers who want AI replies on chat and email without a second vendor.

HubSpot Customer Agent

HubSpot's Customer Agent documentation says it's available on the Professional and Enterprise tiers of HubSpot's hubs, including Service Hub. It answers from your content, can run actions, and transfers to a human when its confidence is low or your escalation rules kick in. It needs a live chat, WhatsApp or Facebook channel connected to your inbox or help desk workspace.

It runs on HubSpot Credits, and HubSpot says credits are consumed only when the agent delivers a resolution. Because it sits in the CRM, it's also one of the few support bots that can qualify a lead in the same conversation.

Best for: companies whose sales and support already share HubSpot.

Gorgias AI Agent

Gorgias is built for ecommerce, and its pricing page says its helpdesk is designed specifically for ecommerce and Shopify. The AI Agent answers support questions and automates actions like order tracking and returns, the requests that fill a store's inbox. It bills per automated interaction. If a human agent replies within 72 hours of the AI's resolution, Gorgias charges that interaction as a regular helpdesk ticket instead. There's a 7-day trial; the page doesn't list a free plan.

Best for: Shopify brands where "where's my order?" is half the ticket volume.

Standalone Chatbots for Small Teams

Tidio with Lyro

Tidio is a live chat tool with an AI agent called Lyro. According to Tidio's pricing page, there's a free plan for the live chat side, and your first 50 Lyro conversations are free for the life of the account. After that, Lyro is billed per AI conversation, not per message, so a long back-and-forth still counts once.

Best for: small businesses and online stores that want live chat and an AI bot in one widget.

Chatbase

Chatbase is the tool most people reach for when they want a bot trained on their website and docs in an afternoon. Chatbase's pricing page currently lists paid tiers with monthly message credits and a 7-day trial on the entry plan, plus an auto-recharge add-on for extra credits.

We've covered it in depth, and the tools that compete with it, in our Chatbase alternatives comparison.

Best for: answering pre-sales and FAQ questions from your own content, fast.

Botpress

Botpress is an agent builder rather than a plug-and-play widget. You get more control over workflows, and more setup. Botpress's pricing page lists a free plan with a conversation allowance and no top-ups or overages. Beyond the AI usage a plan includes, Botpress says it sells extra AI credit at cost.

Best for: teams with someone who'll own the bot's logic, and bots that need to run custom actions.

Enterprise Conversational AI Platforms

If you handle thousands of conversations a day across phone, chat and email, the vendors above may still fit. But two names come up often at the enterprise end.

Ada pitches AI agents across voice, messaging and email for large support organizations, and lists industries from ecommerce and SaaS to insurance and travel. It sells through a demo, and its site doesn't publish a pricing model.

Cognigy is now part of NiCE, which closed its acquisition in September 2025, and the product is branded NiCE Cognigy. It focuses on AI agents for contact centers, with phone and voice as a core channel alongside chat and messaging.

What to Test Before You Buy

Every vendor demo looks great. Your real tickets are what matter. Run a trial with your own top questions and check these:

CheckWhy it mattersHow to test it
Answers from your contentBots confidently repeat outdated or contradictory pagesAsk 20 real questions from last month's tickets and grade each answer
Handoff to a humanA bad handoff makes customers repeat themselvesAsk for a person mid-conversation; see what your agent receives
What counts as billable"Resolution", "outcome", "session" and "conversation" all mean different thingsRead the vendor's definition, then estimate cost on a normal month
ActionsAnswering "where's my order?" needs a live lookup, not an articleAsk for order status, a refund, or an address change
Silent exitsSome billing definitions count a customer who stops replying as resolvedAsk how silent exits are counted, and check your CSAT after launch

That last row deserves attention. Per-resolution billing aligns the vendor's incentive with yours, but only if "resolved" means the customer actually got what they needed. Watch your satisfaction scores and reopened tickets for the first month, not just the containment rate.

Fix your help center first. An AI chatbot for customer service is only as good as the articles it reads. If your top 20 questions don't have clear, current answers written down, no vendor will save you.

Where Taku Fits

A support bot answers customers. The work around it, like drafting help-center articles from resolved tickets, tagging a month of conversations, or summarizing what customers asked about this week, is usually a pile of saved prompts. Taku is an AI-native desktop workspace where you can find an AI app or workflow someone already built for jobs like that, mirror it into your own workspace, and remix it, without setting up repos or API keys. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.

FAQ

What is the best chatbot for customer service?

If you already use a helpdesk, the best one is usually its native AI agent: Intercom Fin, Zendesk AI agents, Freddy in Freshdesk, HubSpot's Customer Agent, or Gorgias for ecommerce. Without a helpdesk, Tidio, Chatbase and Botpress are easier starting points. Large contact centers tend to look at Ada and NiCE Cognigy.

What is the best free AI chatbot for customer service?

Tidio has a free live chat plan and gives your first 50 Lyro AI conversations free. Botpress has a free plan with a conversation allowance. Intercom Fin offers a 14-day trial with no card required. Free plans are good for testing answers on your own questions; expect to need a paid plan for production traffic.

How is an AI-powered chatbot for customer service different from an old chatbot?

Older bots followed scripted decision trees and broke when a customer phrased something unexpectedly. AI chatbot solutions read your help content, write an answer in plain language, and can call actions like order lookups. They still make mistakes, which is why the handoff to a human matters.

How much do customer service chatbots cost?

Most now bill by usage rather than seats alone: per outcome (Fin), per automated resolution (Zendesk), per session (Freshdesk), per interaction (Gorgias), or per AI conversation (Tidio). Each vendor defines its unit differently, so compare them on a typical month of your own volume, using each vendor's pricing page.

Can a chatbot replace my support team?

No. A good bot handles repetitive questions so your team can spend time on the hard ones. Every tool above is built to hand conversations to a person, and the quality of that handoff is one of the best ways to compare them.

Which conversational AI chatbot works on the phone?

Intercom offers Fin Voice on a custom pricing plan for select customers, and Ada and NiCE Cognigy both cover voice for contact centers. Check that the vendor supports your phone system before you commit.
