How to Download Claude Chats: Full Export Guide
October 27, 2026

You can download your Claude chats in about four clicks, but the file doesn't arrive in your browser. It arrives in your inbox. Go to Settings > Privacy, click "Export data", and Claude emails you a download link. The link expires 24 hours after it's delivered.
The quick facts, all from Anthropic's help center:
- Where: Settings > Privacy, on the web app or Claude Desktop. Not on the iOS or Android apps.
- What you get: a
.zipwith your conversation data and account data, in JSON format. - How long the link lasts: 24 hours. You can request a new export any time.
- Team and Enterprise: you can export your own chats only after an owner turns on member exports.
- One chat only: there's no per-chat export button. Sharing a snapshot or exporting an artifact covers most cases.
Below: the exact steps, the rules for work accounts, what's actually in the file, how to read it, and where Claude Code keeps its own history.
How to download your Claude chat history
Anthropic's export article says data exports are available to individual users on Free, Pro and Max plans. To export Claude conversations:
- Open Claude on the web or in Claude Desktop.
- Go to Settings > Privacy.
- Click "Export data".
- Wait for the email. Anthropic notes there may be a small delay while the export is generated.
- Open the email, sign in to Claude if asked, and download the file.
A few details catch people out:
- The email goes to the address on your Claude account. If you signed up with a work Google login, check that inbox.
- You must be signed in to download. If you open the link on another device, sign in to Claude there first.
- The link expires 24 hours after delivery. If you miss it, repeat the steps above for a fresh one.
- Mobile can't start an export. Anthropic says it isn't possible to run an export from Claude for iOS or Android. Use a browser or Claude Desktop instead.
Can you import the export into another Claude account?
No. Anthropic says exported data can't be imported into another personal Claude account, and it doesn't support migrating data between personal accounts. If you're joining a Team or Enterprise organization, Anthropic offers a separate path for moving a personal account into the organization's workspace, so you don't need an export for that.
Exporting on Team and Enterprise plans
Work accounts follow different rules, and it's the most common reason people can't find the button.
| Your role | What you can export | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Member | Your own chats, once an owner allows it | Settings > Privacy > "Export data" |
| Owner | Your own chats, once allowed. Owners can also switch member exports on | Organization settings > Data and privacy |
| Primary Owner | The whole organization's data | Organization settings > Data and privacy > "Export Data" |
Members need an owner to flip a switch first. Per Anthropic's organization export article, Owners and Primary Owners go to Organization settings > Data and privacy and, under "Data management", turn on "Allow members to export their own data." If you don't see "Export data" in your settings, that setting is probably off. Ask an owner.
Primary Owners don't get the personal button at all. They export the whole organization instead, from Organization settings > Data and privacy. Anthropic says organization data exports are only available to Team and Enterprise Primary Owners, and the same 24-hour email link applies.
Deleted content stays deleted. Messages, files and projects removed by users or by enterprise retention settings aren't included in exports started after the deletion.
What's included in a Claude data export
Anthropic describes the contents slightly differently across its pages, so here's what each one says:
- The personal export article says an export includes conversation data and the user data for your account.
- Anthropic's Claude Desktop import guide, which consumes this same file, says an export contains your own conversations, projects and memory, and describes the download as a
.zip. - A Claude for Education help article describes the conversation data as JSON format.
What's not included matters just as much:
| Not in the export | Source |
|---|---|
| Contents of files you uploaded to a chat or to project knowledge (member exports) | Personal and organization export articles |
| Word, Excel, PowerPoint or PDF files that Claude created | Organization export article |
| Anything deleted before the export started | Organization export article |
| Other members' chats (member exports) | Claude Desktop import guide |
The Desktop import guide adds that the only export including uploaded file contents is an organization-level export, which only a workspace owner can request. If a file Claude made matters to you, download it from the chat while it's still available.
Exporting your Claude memory
If you use Claude's memory feature, Anthropic's memory article gives a direct route. Go to Settings > Your Claude and select "Manage" next to Your memory, or ask Claude in a chat to write out its memories of you verbatim. Copy the result into a local file. That's quicker than digging through a full export when memory is all you need.
How to read the exported JSON
The export is built for machines, not for reading in bed. JSON is a structured text format, so expect long files of nested fields rather than a tidy transcript. Anthropic doesn't publish a schema for the file, and fields can change, so look before you parse:
- Unzip it and note which files are inside.
- Open a file in a code editor or a browser. Firefox shows JSON as a collapsible tree, which is a fast way to see how conversations and messages are nested.
- Search it. A plain text search for a phrase you remember will find the conversation it came from.
- Convert it if you need to. A short script in Python, or a tool like
jq, can turn the conversations into Markdown or a spreadsheet. Check the top-level keys in your own file first, rather than trusting a schema from an old tutorial.
You'll find the text you typed and the text Claude wrote. Don't expect attachments or files Claude generated, for the reasons in the table above.
A word on browser extensions
Plenty of browser extensions promise one-click "export to PDF" or "export to Markdown" for Claude chats. None of them are made by Anthropic, and to work they need permission to read every page of your Claude account. If you try one, check who publishes it, read what data it sends where, and remove it when you're done. For anything sensitive, the official export is the safer route.
Saving a single Claude chat
There's no built-in "download this conversation" button. Anthropic documents these options instead.
Share a snapshot. Click "Share" in the upper right of the chat. You can invite specific people by email, which Anthropic's sharing article says works on all plans. On Free, Pro and Max you can also create a public link that anyone can open. Team and Enterprise members can only share inside their organization. A snapshot includes messages up to the moment you share, artifacts included, but not attached files.
Treat a public link as public. Anthropic's public links article says shared pages carry a noindex instruction, but it can't stop someone from reposting the link or copying the page. You can turn off any shared chat from Settings > Privacy under Shared chats.
Export the artifact. If what you want is a document, deck or app Claude built, export that instead of the chat. Anthropic's artifacts article says template-based docs export to Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs, and decks to PowerPoint and PDF. Older legacy artifacts have controls at the top of the panel to copy the content or download it.
Copy the text. For a short exchange, selecting and pasting into your own notes is still the most reliable "export". It also keeps a copy you fully control.
If you keep coming back to the same conversations, putting them in a project is often better than exporting them. Our comparison of Claude Projects and custom GPTs explains how projects hold files and instructions together.
Where Claude Code keeps its chats
Claude Code conversations don't live in your claude.ai history. They're local files. Anthropic's sessions documentation says Claude Code stores transcripts as JSONL at:
~/.claude/projects/<project>/<session-id>.jsonl
Here <project> is your working directory path with non-alphanumeric characters replaced by dashes. Three things to know:
- They're deleted after 30 days by default. Change that with the
cleanupPeriodDayssetting if you want to keep them longer. - The format is internal. Anthropic says it changes between versions, so scripts that parse these files can break on any release.
- Use
/exportfor a clean copy. Inside a session,/exportsaves the current conversation as plain text, or copies it to your clipboard./copygrabs just the last response.
If what you actually want is for Claude Code to remember past sessions, rather than to archive them, see our guide to claude-mem, a third-party memory plugin.
Keep the workflow, not just the transcript
An export is a backup. It doesn't turn a great conversation into something you can run again next week. Taku is built around that second problem: it's an AI-native desktop workspace where you mirror an AI app or workflow, run it, and save it so the useful part sticks around. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.
FAQ
How do I download all my Claude chats?
Go to Settings > Privacy on the web or in Claude Desktop, click "Export data", and download the file from the email Claude sends you. The link expires 24 hours after delivery.
Can I export Claude conversations from the iPhone or Android app?
No. Anthropic says exports can't be run from Claude for iOS or Android. Use claude.ai in a browser or Claude Desktop.
Why don't I see the "Export data" button?
On Team or Enterprise, an owner hasn't turned on "Allow members to export their own data" yet, or you're the Primary Owner, who exports the whole organization from Organization settings instead.
What format is the Claude export?
A .zip download containing your data in JSON. Anthropic doesn't publish a schema, so open the files to see the structure before you write a script against them.
Does the export include my uploaded files?
Not for Team and Enterprise member exports, which Anthropic says don't include the contents of files you uploaded. Anthropic's Claude Desktop guide says only an organization-level export includes uploaded file contents, and the organization export article says those exports still leave out the Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files Claude creates. Keep your own copies of files that matter.
How long does a Claude export take?
Anthropic only says there may be a small delay while the export is generated. Watch the inbox for your Claude account's email address.
Can I download a single Claude chat?
There's no per-chat download. Share a snapshot of the chat, export any artifact it produced, or copy the text you need.
