Gemini Alternatives: The Right Pick for Each Reason You're Leaving

November 6, 2026

Tool Comparisons

The best Gemini alternative depends on what's pushing you away. If you've left Google's apps for Microsoft 365, Microsoft Copilot fits better. If you want better writing or coding, Claude is the usual pick, and it can still read your Gmail and Drive. For privacy, Proton's Lumo or Mistral's EU-hosted Vibe go further than Google does. For research with sources, Perplexity. And if you want the model on your own machine, Google's own Gemma 4 runs locally.

Here's the short version:

  • You don't use Google Workspace: Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft 365) or ChatGPT (no ecosystem tie).
  • Privacy is the reason: Lumo, Mistral Vibe, or a local model.
  • Writing and coding quality: Claude and Claude Code.
  • Research with citations: Perplexity.
  • Fully offline: Gemma 4 or Qwen through Ollama or LM Studio.

What you're actually replacing

Gemini isn't one product any more, so it helps to know which part you want to replace.

  • The Gemini app. Chat, Deep Research, image generation and now video. Google's video page says Gemini Omni has replaced Veo in the Gemini app as its video generation and editing model.
  • Gemini in Workspace. The assistant inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Drive.
  • Gemini Notebook. Google renamed its source-grounded notebook: NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook. If that's the part you're leaving, our NotebookLM alternatives guide covers it on its own.

Most people searching for Google Gemini alternatives mean the app. That's the focus here.

If you're outside Google Workspace

Gemini's biggest advantage is reach into your Google account. If your mail and files aren't there, that advantage is gone.

Microsoft Copilot

If your company runs on Microsoft 365, Microsoft Copilot is the like-for-like swap. Microsoft says Copilot is built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, and grounded in your company's context through what it calls Work IQ. It's the same idea as Gemini in Workspace, pointed at a different suite. If you're weighing it against other options, see our Microsoft Copilot alternatives guide.

Pick it if: your day is Outlook, Teams and Excel.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the general assistant most people already know, and it doesn't assume you live in anyone's office suite. For a direct head-to-head, read our Gemini vs ChatGPT comparison.

Pick it if: you want a capable all-rounder and don't care about suite integration.

If writing or coding is the reason

Claude

Claude is where many writers and developers go when Gemini's drafts feel generic. For code, Claude Code is Anthropic's agent for the terminal, IDE, desktop and web.

The detail most people miss: you don't lose Google by switching. Claude's help center says its Google Workspace connectors for Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive are available to all users. Claude can search and draft email, manage events, and edit Docs, Sheets and Slides in a pane beside the chat. By default it asks for approval before sending, replying or moving files.

On data, Anthropic lets consumer users choose whether chats train its models. If you say no, the standard 30-day retention applies.

Pick it if: quality of writing or code matters more to you than living inside Google's apps.

If privacy is the reason

Start with what Google itself says. The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says human reviewers, including trained reviewers from its service providers, read some of the data it collects, and asks you not to enter confidential information you wouldn't want a reviewer to see. With Keep Activity off, or in a temporary chat, Google still keeps chats with your account for 72 hours. Temporary chats aren't used for training.

That's fairly transparent. But if it's not enough, here are three stricter options.

Lumo by Proton

Lumo comes from the company behind Proton Mail. Proton says conversations are stored with zero-access encryption, so Proton can't read them, and that Lumo's code is open source. It's built and based in Europe.

Pick it if: you want a hosted assistant whose provider says it can't read your chats.

Mistral Vibe

Mistral renamed its assistant: Le Chat is now Vibe, with Work, Code and Chat modes. Mistral says your data is hosted in the EU by default, unless you choose its US API endpoint. Some features can send data temporarily to subprocessors outside the EU.

Vibe also covers coding. Its Code mode comes as a command-line tool, a VS Code extension and a web interface, so developers leaving Gemini Code Assist don't have to leave Europe to replace it.

Pick it if: EU data residency is a compliance requirement.

A local model

The strictest option is a model with no provider at all. That's the next section.

If you want it local

Here's an irony: one of the best local Gemini alternatives comes from Google. Gemma 4 is Google's open-weight model family, separate from the Gemini app. It ships under the Gemma 4 license, tagged Apache 2.0 on Hugging Face, in sizes from tiny edge models up to 31B.

You run it with a local runner:

RunnerWhat it isWhat to know
OllamaCommand line and local APIThe default Gemma 4 download is under 10 GB
LM StudioDesktop app led by its Bionic agentAlso offers cloud models, so check what runs where
JanOpen source desktop chat appSimple ChatGPT-style interface for local models

For coding or harder reasoning, Alibaba's Qwen3.8 27B is a strong step up and still fits on a well-equipped machine. Runners differ in how much they push cloud models, so read their docs before you rely on one for privacy.

The trade-off is real. A local model won't search the web, read your Gmail or make a video. It answers from what it learned and what you give it. For private drafting and document work, that's often enough.

If research with citations is the reason

Gemini has Deep Research, and it's good. But some people want every claim tied to a source they can click. That's Perplexity's core design: an answer engine that cites the web on every answer. We compare the two closely in Perplexity vs Gemini, including how each one's Deep Research works.

If your research is on a fixed set of documents rather than the open web, a notebook tool fits better. See the Gemini Notebook alternatives above.

How to choose

  1. Your work lives in Microsoft 365? Microsoft Copilot.
  2. You want better writing or code, and still use Gmail? Claude, with its Google Workspace connectors.
  3. You want an assistant that can't read your chats? Lumo.
  4. You need EU hosting? Mistral Vibe.
  5. You want nothing to leave your computer? Gemma 4 through Ollama or LM Studio.
  6. You need sources for every answer? Perplexity.
  7. You mostly use Gemini for video? Check Gemini Omni first. It replaced Veo, so the tool you're leaving may have changed.

Switching assistants is easy. Rebuilding the prompts, files and steps that made the old one useful is the slow part. Taku is an AI-native desktop workspace where you can mirror an AI app or workflow someone already got working, run it on your own files, and keep it for next time. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Google Gemini?

For most people, Claude or ChatGPT. Claude is stronger for writing and coding and can still connect to Gmail, Calendar and Drive. ChatGPT is the most familiar general assistant. If your work is in Microsoft 365, Microsoft Copilot is the closer match.

Is there a more private alternative to Gemini?

Yes. Proton's Lumo says it stores chats with zero-access encryption, and Mistral hosts data in the EU by default. The most private option is a local model like Gemma 4, where nothing leaves your machine.

Is there a free Gemini alternative?

Running Gemma 4 or Qwen locally costs nothing beyond your hardware. Most hosted assistants also have a no-cost way in, with limits that change often. Check each vendor's pricing page.

Can I use another AI with Gmail and Google Drive?

Yes. Claude's Google Workspace connectors let it search and draft Gmail messages, manage Google Calendar events, and work with Drive files, including editing Docs, Sheets and Slides. It asks for approval before sending email or moving files by default.

What replaced Veo in the Gemini app?

Gemini Omni. Google's video generation page says Omni replaced Veo in the Gemini app, combining video generation with chat-based video editing.

What happened to NotebookLM?

Google renamed it Gemini Notebook. If you're looking for a replacement, the reasons and options differ from the main Gemini app, so we cover them in a separate guide.
