HeyGen vs Synthesia: Which AI Avatar Tool Fits Your Team?

November 8, 2026

AI Agents & ToolsTool Comparisons

HeyGen vs Synthesia is less about which avatar looks more real and more about where your plan puts the features you need. HeyGen puts 4K export, its newest avatar model and translation in 175+ languages and dialects on self-serve plans, and adds SSO and SCORM on its Business plan. Synthesia lists SCORM, SAML/SSO, brand kits and 1-click translation with lip sync under Enterprise, and leans into training features like roleplay practice and interactive video.

The short version:

  • Pick HeyGen for marketing, social and sales video, translation at volume, 4K output, or longer videos without a sales call.
  • Pick Synthesia if you're an L&D, HR or compliance team buying through procurement, and security review, roleplay practice and enterprise controls matter more than self-serve speed.
  • Both have free plans with watermarked output, credit-based paid plans, custom avatars of yourself, and a prompt-to-video assistant.
  • Both shipped new avatar models in 2026: HeyGen's Avatar V in April and Synthesia's Express-3 in July.

We already compare each tool against the wider field in our HeyGen alternatives and Synthesia alternatives guides. This post is the head-to-head, checked against each vendor's own pricing pages and announcements.

Avatar quality: Avatar V vs Express-3

Both companies say their newest model is their most realistic yet. That's the expected claim. The more useful differences are in how you build a custom avatar and what each model is tuned for.

HeyGen's Avatar V is its flagship model. HeyGen's Avatar V announcement says it builds a custom avatar from a 15-second recording, "no professional camera setup, no studio lighting," and pitches it on identity consistency: the same face and voice across angles, outfits and long videos. One recording can produce different looks and settings. On the pricing page, Avatar V sits on the Pro plan and up, with limited access on Creator and Avatar IV on the free plan.

Synthesia's Express-3 launched on July 15, 2026. Synthesia's Express-3 launch post calls it "our most advanced avatar model for lip sync, natural body movement and gestures." Avatars can carry a sentiment, such as serious or friendly, and Synthesia says videos can generate up to twice as fast. The model is rolling out in stages, starting with new stock avatars, so not every avatar in your workspace uses it yet.

Custom avatars work differently on each side:

The honest read: HeyGen is betting that a phone recording is enough for most people, with a studio shoot as an add-on. Synthesia also offers a studio-filmed tier for companies that want a presenter who looks the same in every training module for years. Make the same 30-second test video in both before you trust either claim. HeyGen's own Avatar V page says Synthesia needs studio time to match it, which is a competitor's claim, not a test result.

Translation and languages

HeyGen's pricing page lists 175+ languages and dialects on its paid plans (30+ on the free plan), with voice cloning and lip sync so the translated video still sounds like the original speaker.

Synthesia lists 140+ languages for creating videos. Its pricing page splits translation further:

  • Dubbing output covers 70+ languages on the Basic, Starter and Pro plans, and 140+ on Enterprise.
  • 1-Click Translation of whole videos is listed as an Enterprise feature.
  • Lip-Sync on dubbed video uses 2× credits when enabled.

If you plan to take one English video into ten markets without a sales conversation, HeyGen is the simpler buy. If you're already on Synthesia Enterprise, translation is covered there. Either way, a language count tells you nothing about how your Polish or Thai voice sounds. Render the same script in every target language and have a native speaker check it.

Training, LMS and interactive video

This is Synthesia's home ground, though HeyGen has moved in.

Synthesia is built around corporate learning. Videos can include quizzes, clickable calls to action and branching paths. Roleplay Sessions let staff practice a conversation with an avatar that responds and scores them, and Survey Sessions run avatar-led interviews. Every plan, including the free one, lists a monthly allowance of shared roleplay sessions. Its pricing page lists SOC 2 and GDPR compliance, and its responsible-AI page says it is certified to ISO 42001.

HeyGen now sells to the same buyers. Its Business plan lists SAML/SSO, SCORM export, LMS integrations, a brand kit and asset library, and a shared workspace, and its plan comparison has a Learning & Development section covering interactive video, quizzes and branching. HeyGen's security page lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and CCPA. For live, two-way avatars, HeyGen points to LiveAvatar, its real-time avatar product.

What that means in practice: a 20-person enablement team that needs SCORM and SSO can get them on HeyGen's Business plan. On Synthesia, those features mean an Enterprise contract, which also brings unlimited personal avatars and unlimited video minutes.

Pricing model and plan limits

Both use credits, and both change their numbers often, so here's the structure rather than the prices. Check HeyGen's pricing and Synthesia's pricing for current figures.

Two details that catch buyers out:

  1. Synthesia's Starter and Pro plans have one editor seat. Guests can review, but a second person creating videos needs a bigger plan.
  2. HeyGen's cheapest paid plan exports in 1080p and only gets limited Avatar V. If 4K or the full new model matters, compare against Pro.

Both vendors require consent for custom avatars. HeyGen's ethics page says you "must ensure you have the legal rights and explicit consent of any individual whose likeness is used," and that you must honor removal requests. Synthesia's ethics page lists "consent requirements for avatars" and moderation at the point of creation as core to its approach.

Practical rules for either tool:

  • Only build an avatar of yourself or someone who has agreed in writing.
  • Agree what happens when an employee leaves before you build their avatar.
  • Tell viewers when a presenter is AI-generated, especially in sales and customer-facing video.
  • Treat voice clones the same way. If voice is the main job, our ElevenLabs alternatives guide covers dedicated voice tools.

The gap in raw output quality is smaller than either company's marketing suggests. Write one 60-second script, render it in both free plans with your own avatar or a stock one, and judge the lip sync, the voice and the editing time. That test tells you more than any feature table, including this one.

Where Taku fits

Avatar tools make the clip. The work around it, like drafting scripts from a policy document, localizing a batch, or turning a slide deck into ten short training videos, is often a workflow someone has already built. Taku is an AI-native desktop workspace where you can mirror a ready-made AI app or workflow, run it on your own files, and keep the ones that work. It doesn't replace HeyGen or Synthesia. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.
