Leonardo AI vs Midjourney: Model Hub or Signature Look?
November 8, 2026

Leonardo AI vs Midjourney comes down to one question: do you want many models in one app, or one model with a look you can't get anywhere else? Leonardo is now a Canva-owned hub that runs its own models next to GPT Image, Nano Banana, FLUX, Ideogram and a long list of video models, with a free daily allowance and a developer API. Midjourney runs only its own V8 models, has no free plan on its website, and still produces the most distinctive images of the two.
Here's the short version:
- Pick Midjourney if you choose images by eye: concept art, mood boards, editorial and style exploration.
- Pick Leonardo if you need range (photos, text in images, video, 3D), a free way to start, an API, or a direct path into Canva.
- Both now edit images. Midjourney's V8.2 edit model and Leonardo's Inline Editor both take plain-language instructions and reference images.
- Privacy works differently. On Leonardo's free plan your images are public. On Midjourney, only the top plans can hide images from public view.
Below: what each product is in late 2026, a side-by-side table, where each one wins, and a quick way to decide.

What each tool is in 2026
Leonardo: a Canva-owned model hub
Canva bought Leonardo.Ai in 2024. Leonardo still runs its own app and API, and the two products now connect: Leonardo's help article on editing images in Canva describes a one-click Edit in Canva button that opens a generation as a new Canva design. It works for individual users but not for Teams, and it sends one image at a time.
The bigger change is the model list. Leonardo's API documentation has guides for its own Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism and Phoenix models, then for OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 (Flare and Sunburst), Google's Nano Banana 2.1, FLUX.2 Pro, Ideogram 4.5, Seedream 5.0 and Krea 3. On the video side it lists Veo 3.1, Kling 4.0, Seedance 2.5, Gemini Omni Flash, Wan 3.0 and Leonardo's own Motion 2.0. There are 3D models (Rodin V2, Meshy 7) and audio models too.
So "Leonardo" is no longer one model's look. It's a workspace where you pick the model per job.
Midjourney: one model family, built for taste
Midjourney goes the other way. You only get Midjourney's models, and every release is tuned for how images look. Version 8.2 launched on July 24, 2026, with an update focused on aesthetics, image quality and personalization. It followed V8.1, which became the default model in June. Personalization profiles, moodboards and style references let you push output toward your own taste.
You use it in a browser at midjourney.com or through the Discord bot. Discord is optional now. In October 2026 Midjourney began testing a Thinking mode on its alpha site, which reruns a V8.2 job to fix missed prompt details. Midjourney says it helps with prompt accuracy, typography and coherence.
Image quality and style
Midjourney still wins on look. If you put the same loose prompt into both, Midjourney is more likely to return something that feels composed and finished without extra work. That's the reason people pay for it. Its levers are aesthetic ones: personalization, moodboards, style references and the --v and Raw settings.
Leonardo wins on range. Because it hosts many models, you can match the model to the job:
| Job | A good fit inside Leonardo |
|---|---|
| Photorealistic product or portrait shots | Lucid Realism, GPT Image 2.5 or Nano Banana 2.1 |
| Posters, thumbnails and ads with text | Ideogram 4.5 |
| Precise edits to an existing image | Nano Banana or FLUX Kontext through the Inline Editor |
| Video from a still | Veo 3.1, Kling 4.0 or Seedance 2.5 |
| A stylized house look | Lucid Origin or Phoenix |
Text in images used to be Midjourney's weak spot. Thinking mode is aimed partly at typography, but it's still an alpha test. If readable text is the main requirement today, Leonardo's hosted Ideogram models are the safer choice.
Editing and consistency
Both tools moved from "generate and hope" toward editing.
Midjourney's V8 edit model arrived in late August 2026. It edits from instructions, generates from up to four reference images (it replaced Omni Reference), and handles inpainting and outpainting. It also works with personalization, moodboards and style references. A September update made targeted edits change only the selected pixels, so you can make repeated edits without degrading the image.
Leonardo's Inline Editor appears under any generated image. You type a change in plain language, swap between "Omni" models such as FLUX Kontext, GPT Image and Nano Banana, and reference up to six images depending on the model. Because those are other vendors' editing models, you get several editing styles in one place.
The practical difference: Midjourney edits stay in Midjourney's look. Leonardo edits can use whichever model is best at the specific fix.
Free plan, pricing model and privacy
Neither tool should be judged on a price snapshot, because both change plans often. The models are what matter.
Leonardo has a free plan. Its tokens FAQ says free accounts get a daily token allowance that resets every 24 hours and doesn't accumulate. Paid plans get a monthly allowance, and unused tokens roll into a bank. Different models cost different amounts of tokens. The API is billed separately, pay-as-you-go, from an account balance.
Midjourney is subscription only. Its help center says no free trial is available on the website or in Discord. The only trial it mentions is a limited one in its separate niji · journey mobile app. Plans are tiered by GPU time.
Privacy is the detail people miss. Leonardo's privacy help article says private generation is only available to paid members, so free-plan images go to the public feed. On Midjourney, the private image mode is limited to the Pro and Mega plans. Midjourney's own alpha changelog warns that images made without it can still appear on Explore and on profiles, even when made inside a private folder. If you're working on unreleased client work, check which plan keeps it private before you start.
Leonardo's commercial-use FAQ says free users can use their images commercially, but public images can also be used by Leonardo and remixed by other users; full ownership applies to private generations on a paid plan. For either tool, read the current terms before you use outputs for a client, since ownership terms differ by plan.
Workflow: API, apps and teams
Leonardo fits into pipelines. It has a REST API, official SDKs and an MCP server that lets assistants like Cursor generate images directly. The API also runs "Blueprints," preset multi-step jobs. If you're building a product that generates images, Leonardo is the one of the two you can build on.
Midjourney fits into a person's creative process. There's no public developer API. Collaboration is improving: shared folders on the alpha site let you invite people as collaborators or viewers. But it's built around one person exploring images, not around automation.
Teams that finish in Canva get the most out of Leonardo. Generate in Leonardo, send it to Canva with one click, and lay out the final design there.
How to choose
- You pick images by eye and want the best-looking result. Midjourney.
- You need many kinds of output from one subscription: photos, text, edits, video, 3D. Leonardo.
- You want to try before paying. Leonardo's free plan. Midjourney has no free trial on the web.
- You're building an app or automation. Leonardo, for its API.
- You finish designs in Canva. Leonardo.
- Neither feels right. See our guides to Leonardo AI alternatives and Midjourney alternatives. If you want to run models on your own hardware, our Midjourney vs Stable Diffusion comparison covers that choice.
Plenty of creators use both: Midjourney to find the look, Leonardo to produce variations, video and final assets.
Where Taku fits
Image generators make the picture. The workflow around it, like turning one product shot into a set of social posts or a weekly batch of thumbnails, is usually rebuilt by hand each time. Taku is an AI-native desktop workspace where you mirror AI apps and workflows someone already got working, remix them for your own files, and run them again. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now. Its free app library is a good place to see what's there.
