Best AI Hairstyle App: 7 Ways to Try On a New Look
October 29, 2026

An AI hairstyle app lets you upload a selfie and see yourself with a different cut, color, or fringe before you sit in the salon chair. The best AI hairstyle app for most people is YouCam Makeup if you want a big preset library on your phone, or Fotor or LightX if you'd rather try styles in a browser without installing anything. If you want to describe a look in your own words, MyEdit and Google Gemini both take text prompts.
Here's the short version:
- Biggest preset library on mobile: YouCam Makeup (250+ preset hairstyles, per its App Store listing)
- Free in the browser: Fotor and LightX
- Copy a cut from a reference photo: YouCam Makeup, MyEdit, PhotoDirector
- A batch of headshot-style photos: Hairstyle AI
- Describe anything in plain English: Gemini
Every feature below comes from the vendor's own website or official app store listing, checked on 2026-10-29. We didn't use review sites. Prices change often, so we describe how each one charges rather than quoting numbers.
One more thing before you upload a selfie: your face photo is sensitive data. We cover what that means, and what two of these vendors' policies actually say, further down.

The 7 Best AI Hairstyle Apps
1. YouCam Makeup
YouCam Makeup from Perfect Corp is a full beauty editor, and hair is one of its main sections. Its App Store listing lists three hair tools:
- AI Hairstyle: 250+ preset hairstyles, from short and long cuts to waves and bangs
- Custom Hair Try On: upload a reference photo of a cut you like, with an option to keep your natural hair color
- Hair Color Changer: natural or bold colors
It's a free download, and a Premium subscription unlocks the full feature set. If you're also curious about makeup or face edits, it's the most complete app here. If you only want hair, it may feel like a lot of app.
2. PhotoDirector
PhotoDirector is CyberLink's photo editor. Its Google Play listing describes AI Hairstyle as a way to explore your perfect style in a "virtual salon," and lists "new hairstyles and added hair volume" under its AI try-on tools. The desktop version, PhotoDirector 365, lists AI Hairstyle as a way to preview cuts and use the results as a reference when you visit your stylist. CyberLink's What's New page says an October 8, 2026 update gave the desktop tool a new engine and support for a reference hairstyle image.
On pricing, CyberLink's own reply on the Play listing says Premium keeps classic editing free while credits cover AI tools that run on its servers. So expect AI hairstyle edits to draw on credits.
Pick it if you already use PhotoDirector for other edits. If you just want a haircut preview, MyEdit (also from CyberLink, below) is the more focused tool.
3. LightX
LightX's AI Hairstyle Generator runs in a browser in three steps: upload a JPEG or PNG, pick a preset or write a custom prompt, then generate and download. Presets cover both men and women, including bangs, braids, curls, buns, ponytails, a pompadour, a side part, a buzz cut, a taper fade, and a quiff. To try a color, you add it to your prompt.
LightX also runs single-purpose pages for things like bangs, a mullet, or a bald look, which are handy if you already know what you want to test. The web page offers free daily AI credits after sign-up, and the app's listing adds a pro subscription or credit packs.
4. MyEdit
MyEdit is CyberLink's browser editor, and its AI hairstyle tool gives you three ways in:
- 70+ ready-made templates for men and women
- A text prompt describing the look you want
- A reference photo of a cut to copy
You use either a prompt or a reference photo in each generation, not both. MyEdit runs online on any device, and there are iOS and Android apps too. The page advertises free daily credits and downloads without a watermark, with paid plans on its pricing page.
The prompt option is the reason to choose it. "Shoulder-length layers with curtain bangs, dark brown" is easier to type than to find in a preset grid.
5. Fotor
Fotor's AI hairstyle changer is the easiest free option to try in a browser. The page says you can try on hairstyles with your own pictures for free online. You upload a photo, pick a style or type a prompt, and see the result.
The style list is broad. For women it includes curtain bangs with layers, a blunt bob, a collarbone lob, and a pixie cut. For men it includes a buzz cut, mid fade, modern mullet, pompadour, quiff, and wolf cut. You can also test colors like blonde, silver, or pastel shades, and there's a separate bangs simulator.
Fotor has apps for iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac. The App Store listing mentions AI Hairstyle and a Pro subscription. Fotor's privacy terms are worth reading closely, and we do that below.
6. Hairstyle AI
Hairstyle AI works differently from the rest. Instead of editing one selfie on the spot, you upload a set of selfies and get back a full photoshoot. The site says each one includes 30 hairstyles in 4 poses each, for 120 HD photos, with results in about an hour. It covers male and female haircuts.
It charges a one-time payment per photoshoot rather than a subscription. Pick it if you want a realistic set of photos to compare side by side or show your stylist. Skip it if you just want a quick look at one cut.
App stores carry several similarly named apps from other developers. The service described here is the one at hairstyleai.com.
7. Google Gemini (a general-purpose alternative)
Gemini isn't a hairstyle app, but its image editing does the same job. Google's own image page promotes it with "Try out infinite hairstyles with Gemini," and it runs on Google's Nano Banana image models. Upload a selfie and describe the change: "give me a short pixie cut, keep my face and background the same."
Google says image creation is available for free, with limits, and paid plans get higher generation limits. Every image carries an invisible SynthID watermark and a visible watermark.
It's the most flexible option, and the least predictable. Results depend heavily on your prompt. We compared Google's image models in Nano Banana 2 vs Pro if you want to know which one to pick.
How to Get Realistic Results From a Hairstyle Try-On App
Every app on this list works best with the same kind of photo. LightX asks for an in-focus JPEG or PNG. Hairstyle AI asks for selfies against a plain background with good lighting. In practice:
| Do | Why |
|---|---|
| Face the camera straight on | Side angles confuse where the hairline is |
| Use even, natural light | Harsh shadows end up looking like dark streaks in new hair |
| Pull your hair back, or wear it flat | Big hair makes it harder to map a short cut onto your head |
| Use a plain background | Busy backgrounds blend into the new hair |
| Try a reference photo for a specific cut | A preset called "bob" can mean ten different bobs |
Then treat the result as a sketch, not a promise. An AI preview shows shape and color, but it can't tell you whether your hair's texture will hold a cut. Show the image to your stylist and ask.
If you like trying things on virtually, the same tech now covers clothes, glasses and makeup too. We covered those in our guide to AI-powered virtual try-on tools.
Privacy: What Happens to Your Face Photo
A clear photo of your face isn't like other images. In the US, the FTC's 2023 Policy Statement on Biometric Information defines biometric information to include "depictions, images, descriptions, or recordings of an individual's facial features." A selfie you upload to a hairstyle app fits that description, whether or not the app ever builds a face template from it.
So before you upload, read the app's privacy policy and look for answers to four questions:
- Is the photo stored, and for how long?
- Is it used to train AI models?
- Is it sent to another company to process?
- Can you delete it, and how?
Here's what we found when we read two of them.
Fotor. Fotor's privacy policy (updated October 20, 2026) separates "Face Data" (the 8 to 15 selfies used for its AI avatar feature) from other AI inputs. It says it permanently deletes Face Data once the avatars are generated and doesn't use it to train other AI products. For other AI features, though, it says your input is stored on its servers. The policy says retention generally lasts as long as your account exists, and that images and prompts may go to third-party model providers. You can delete your inputs in the app yourself. Separately, the hairstyle changer page says photos are deleted from its servers within one hour after the session. Read both if you use it.
Hairstyle AI. Its privacy policy says personal data is deleted within 14 days of a confirmed deletion request. But when we read it, it didn't specifically mention selfies, photos, or model training. Since the service trains on a set of your selfies, ask support how those photos are handled before you upload.
Gemini. Google's Gemini Apps privacy hub says a subset of chats are reviewed by human reviewers. It asks you not to enter confidential information you wouldn't want a reviewer to see. If you turn Keep Activity off, Google says future chats are still kept for 72 hours.
None of this means you shouldn't use these apps. It means you should choose on purpose:
- Use the browser tools without an account when you can
- Delete uploads and generated images when you're done
- Don't upload photos of other people, especially kids, without asking them
- Skip apps whose policy doesn't say what happens to your photo
Which AI Hairstyle App Should You Use?
- You want the most presets on your phone: YouCam Makeup.
- You want a free try-on in a browser right now: Fotor or LightX.
- You know exactly what you want and can describe it: MyEdit or Gemini.
- You want a realistic batch of photos to show your stylist: Hairstyle AI.
- You already edit photos in PhotoDirector: use its AI Hairstyle tool.
Most of the free options limit you per day, so try two or three of them on the same selfie and compare. The differences show up fast.
If you end up juggling several single-purpose AI apps like these, it's worth having one place to keep the ones that earn their spot. Taku is an AI-native desktop workspace where you can find, run and save AI apps instead of re-finding them in your bookmarks. Its free app library is a good place to start, and you can browse more image tools in our list of the best free AI image generators. Taku is in Beta, and the Mac app is available now.
FAQ
What is the best AI hairstyle app?
For most people on a phone, YouCam Makeup, because its App Store listing offers 250+ preset hairstyles plus reference-photo try-on and hair color. For a free browser option, try Fotor or LightX.
Is there a free AI hairstyle app?
Several have free options. Fotor's page says you can try hairstyles on your photos for free online. LightX and MyEdit give free daily credits, and Gemini's image editing is free with limits. Most have paid upgrades for heavier use.
How do I try on hairstyles with AI?
Upload a clear, front-facing selfie in even light, then pick a preset, describe the style in a prompt, or upload a reference photo of the cut you want. Download the result and compare a few styles side by side.
Can an AI hairstyle changer show hair color too?
Yes. YouCam Makeup and Fotor have dedicated color options. In LightX, MyEdit, and Gemini, you describe the color in your prompt.
Is there an AI hairstyle app for men?
All of the apps here cover men's cuts. Fotor lists a buzz cut, mid fade, pompadour, quiff, and wolf cut. LightX includes a taper fade, fauxhawk, and side part.
Are AI hairstyle apps safe to use?
They can be, but you're uploading your face, which the FTC counts as biometric information. Read the privacy policy before you upload. Check whether the photo is stored, used for training, or shared, and how to delete it.
How accurate are hairstyle try-on apps?
They're good at showing shape and color on your face. They can't predict how your hair's texture, thickness, or cowlicks will behave after a real cut. Use the result as a conversation starter with your stylist.
